PROJECT OVERVIEW

“Vivenciando e Aprendendo” is a collection of children’s books from the Ari de Sá education system, whose protagonist is the girl Liz and her friends. Each book tells stories of Liz’s everyday life with deep reflections on friendship, teamwork, family, and school. The collection consists of textbooks with activities for children from 4 to 6 years old.

This book series stands out particularly as it has an application with games to further engage students. Book pages have a bookmark, and when the phone cameras are pointed at them, a game is revealed.

Game activities train motor coordination, memory, and basic mathematics.

In this project, I worked on the virtual product’s design; developing all games (UX/UI, gameplay, programming, and tests).

Altogether there are 4 books, with 20 games total. The project was developed in two months and uses the Vuforia augmented reality library to identify the book’s activities.

PROBLEM & GOALS

Problems:

The greatest challenge in working with children in the literacy process is that we need many visual feedback instruments that do not rely on textual markings. After all, the child is still learning to read and write. Thus, for the project, we chose to use a narrator explaining how the activities would be carried out.

Interfaces should be clean so as not to confuse the child who is in motor and cognitive development. All the games are focused on using a single action through a single touch and use mechanisms to allow the child to repeat the activity as many times as they want.

Goals:

  • Create games with simple gameplay, which last a maximum of 3 minutes per game so that the child does not lose patience;
  • Create a mechanism to simply recognize the pages of books that contain games;
  • Due to the need to use simple, one-touch interactions, the repetition of mechanics should be avoided so as not to make the games predictable;
  • The game must run on Android and iOS tablets and smartphones.
